California Modern...want this? buy that!

I was thinking how furniture design mirrors architectural movements, and that it would be fun sometimes to try and find the architectural equivalent (I totally did not spell that correctly the first three tries...) of furniture in the shop.

To me, this house and this Paul Evans-inspired armoire epitomize California Modern; rustic, handmade, artistic, a little bit hippie, yet totally modern.

What do you think? If this armoire was a house, wouldn't it be this one?

This armoire totally wants to go skinnydip in that pool and listen to Cat Stevens right now.

  1. Hi Summer!
We just spent a discouraging day looking at antique and used furniture stores for a rocking chair for our... nursery! Yes! (One of the owners actually asked me if I had heard of Pottery Barn? *Face Plant*)

Here's an idea of what I'm looking for: http://www.amazon.com/Porch-Rocker-Woven-Seat-Back/dp/B003J5MGVO/ref=br_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1NJPJBP9YZCYR&colid=2HR9GW1BLS2W3

I've looked on AT: Ohdeedoh as well, and it seems that most people just luck out on eBay or their local thrift store.
Here's a nursery that has an egg chair that I absolutely love, even though it doesn't rock: http://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/frances-mays-patchwork-nurserynursery-tour-143070

And this one on eBaby is pretty gorgeous too but sadly way out of price range: http://cgi.ebay.com/Hans-Wegner-Style-rocking-rocker-chair-woven-eames-/320681912632?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aaa21a938

I guess the feel is light and cool, woven seat/back, cozy, neutral colors... I was thinking of sewing up a quick Marimekko lumbar or head cushion to attach as well. Our price range is up to about $300.

I know you're a busy lady, but I figured if anyone knew how/where to look for a piece of gorgeous, vintage furniture it would be you... And, of course, if I could support your business, even better.

    Sarah

  2. Well hey baby (mama)!
I'm so happy for you guys...what an incredibly fortunate baby to get you two for parents!
It seems like whenever you try to look for specific furniture, it's nowhere to be found...

The first picture seems a little more traditional and of course the Wegner style one is traditional materials but modern shape, so you're open to both?

If you like that round rattan chair on Ohdeedoh just as an accent for the nursery, they're pretty easy to find (and cheap!) on Ebay by searching "hoop chair".

I'm going to keep my eyes out for you and see what I can come up with!

  3. Sarah here's the vintage rattan hoop chair and it's child sized!

  4. Yep, I saw that chair. I just thought it was too small (for me!). Modern shape with traditional materials is a great way to describe it. I kind of already searched eBay and Etsy, which is another reason I'm feeling discouraged.
I had thought about the Eames rocker as well, but it's just too overused. I'm already tired of looking at nurseries that all look the same.
I'm not due til October, so there's actually quite a bit of time.
Thank you for keeping an eye out!

  5. Grr. Ebay. I don't know why I always type "Ebaby". Freudian slip, I suppose.
